Change Your Brain, Change Your Life
The research on how the brain changes in those who use compassion-based meditation fascinates me.
8 weeks of this type of meditation is enough to show a structural change to the brain on an MRI. The activity in the left pre-frontal cortex increases.
There is a relationship between mood set point and which side of an individual’s prefrontal cortex is dominant.
When the right prefrontal cortex is more active, there are higher rates of depression. When the left prefrontal cortex is more active, our overall mood is much happier.
People who practice compassion-based meditation as a regular practice become happier over time.
The aim of meditation isn’t to relax or stop thinking. It’s a training for our mind and heart that in turn, transforms our life.
We can learn to turn down the internal inner critic, filled with self-judgments that cripple our true potential.
This changes how we respond under pressure. We can be kinder to ourselves. We make wiser choices. We are free to live in our true nature.
“The curious paradox is that when I accept myself just as I am, then I change.” - Carl Rogers
